Ectoin® is a what we call an extremolyte. These are natural molecules formed by microorganisms. Such organisms, consisting of one or a few cells, are among the oldest forms of life in the world. After its discovery, it quickly became apparent that the molecular all-rounder can also be useful to us in many areas of life. This is because it acts like a protective shield in nature: thanks to Ectoin®, microorganisms can survive in hostile environments such as deserts or salt lakes, geysers or even in perpetual ice. This is exactly the mechanism we use for your skin.

Ectoin® is tough: intense heat, freezing cold, extreme drought or a high salt concentration do not affect this molecule at all. In order to make use of this special resilience, it is obtained in a natural way. For this, certain microorganisms have to be exposed to an extreme environment so that they produce Ectoin® for survival. In this process, the Ectoin® binds water molecules from its environment, and a so-called Ectoin® hydrocomplex is formed. And this protects and stabilises neighbouring cells, enzymes and proteins from drying out.
After a certain time, so much Ectoin® is formed that it can be used in our skin care products. Here, it releases its positive effect on your skin.

In a study with 24 women between 30 and 60 years of age with normal, dry and sensitive skin, all of them showed an improved skin appearance after a four-week application with Ectoin®. Deep structures were smoothed out. Skin looked healthier and younger. The depth of wrinkles improved by up to 23%. Skin flaking was reduced by -76%, and roughness was reduced by up to -86%. During another study with five women with normal to dry skin, the moisture content of the skin increased by up to 200%. This high level of moisture was maintained during the following seven days. Ectoin® therefore has a noticeable long-term moisturising effect on your skin and increases its overall elasticity for a smoother and fresher appearance.
